She was born in Sacramento, California on August 30, 1942 to Harry and Martha Dockter. Jan was raised along with her sister, Pamela, in the home her father built by hand. She attended McClatchy High School in Sacramento, California where she was a proud McClatchy Lion's Cheerleader until she graduated in 1960. Jan started working at Pacific Bell Telephone Company where she met her future husband, Fred. In December of 1965, the first night they went out Fred asked her to dance to Tony Bennett's "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" and they were together ever since. She married Ferdinand "Fred" Varrelman on February 6, 1966 and became stepmother to Robert and Gregory Varrelman. In 1966 their daughter Tracy was born. Jan later retired from Pacific Bell in March of 1994.

Jan loved to play golf. Fred and Jan would regularly vacation to destinations known for their beautiful golf courses, especially Hawaii and Arizona. She was a loyal Sacramento Kings fan and enjoyed meeting several players over the years. Jan loved to read, especially any Nicholas Sparks novels, whom she also met on several occasions. She was looking forward to reading her stepson's, Greg, first novel that was recently published. Jan enjoyed playing Bunco and being very involved in her grandchildren's school activities.
Fred and Jan moved to Heritage Park in 2005 where they met several new friends who became their extended family. They frequently engaged in the many activities Heritage Park had to offer, such as Wine Club, Ladies/Men's Night, Golfing, Mexican Train, Luaus, Holiday Events, Movie Night or just dining at the Pub. She loved to attend the musicals at 24th Street Theater and the Woodland Opera House. Jan loved spending time with family and friends. She made friends everywhere she went and truly loved everyone.
Jan is survived by her husband of 51 years, Fred Varrelman; her daughter, Tracy Williams; her stepsons Robert Varrelman and Gregory (Grace) Varrelman; her sister, Pamela Guerrero; her grandchildren Tawny (Rusty) Kerley, Nichole Williams, Gregory Williams, Paul (Joy) Varrelman, Ryan (Stephanie) Varrelman; her great-grandchildren Matthew Kerley, Annabelle Kerley, Spencer Varrelman; her nephew Rudy Corona and many other extended family.
